CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team dropped its final twogames of the 2000 UVA Hoo’s Who Tournament Sunday afternoon, March 26 atThe Park in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers fell to Rutgers 5-4 andPenn State 7-3 in eight innings. Penn State defeated Rutgers in the firstgame of the day 6-5 and won the tournament with a 4-0 record. UVa finishedfourth in the tourney with a 1-3 record. Virginia now stands at 11-25 onthe season, while Penn State improves to 16-8. Rutgers is now 4-5.
In the 5-4 loss to Rutgers, the Cavaliers fell behind 5-0, but scored threetimes in the bottom of the sixth and once in the seventh, but could notscore the tying run. Fourth-year left fielder Jen Krill (Huntington Beach,Calif./Huntington) plated the first two runs in the sixth with a double andthen scored the third run of the inning. Virginia closed the gap to 5-4 inthe bottom of the seventh when second-year first baseman Kristen Dennis(Encinitas, Calif./ La Costa Canyon) scored on a passed ball. Rutgers’Andria Koehler was able to get the final two outs of the inning withrunners on first and second to pick up the save and preserve the win forLeah Black (2-3). Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) tookthe loss for the Cavaliers as she allowed five runs (four earned) on sixhits in four innings of work. Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham,Pa./Central Bucks East) pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Zagoland allowed just one hit while striking out five. Krill led the ‘Hoosoffensively with two hits, two RBI and a run, while fourth-year centerfielder Corinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Eprata) was 2-3 with a run. Third-yearright-fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and first-yearcatcher Stephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel) both added apair of hits apiece for UVa.
Against Penn State, the Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead and then erased a 3-2deficit with a run in the seventh, only to fall 7-3 in eight innings.Dennis and fourth-year Amy Peay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) hit run-scoringsingles in the first and fourth innings, respectively, to give Virginia a2-0 lead. Penn State tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of thesixth and took a 3-2 lead with another run in the top of the seventh. UVatied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings.Calhoun led off the eighth with a double and scored on second-year leftfielder Kelly McCabe’s (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) two-out single toleft. The Nittany Lions scored four runs in the top of the eighth to earnthe victory. Dennis took the loss for Virginia as she pitched seven-plusinnings and allowed five earned runs. PSU’s Tanis Ambelang earned the winwith two innings of one hit relief of starter Jaci Kalp. Calhoun laced apair of doubles for Virginia and scored pair of runs as well.
In the first game of the day, Penn State held off Rutgers 6-5 as theScarlet Knights threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh,but Ambelang retired the only batter she faced to earn the save. KellyMcCann earned the win to improve to 5-0.
The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, March 28 when they hostHarvard in a doubleheader at The Park. The first game begins at 2:00 p.m.
