RICHMOND, Va. — Junior outfielder Hunter Wyant (White Hall,VA/Western Albemarle) launched two home runs and knocked in four runs asthe Virginia Cavaliers defeated the Richmond Spiders 11-2 this afternoon atPitt Field. Virginia raised its record to 14-14-1, while the Spiders fellto 13-13.
Wyant launched a solo homer in the first, part of a four-run outburst bythe Cavaliers. Senior shortstop Tim LaVigne (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) had atwo-run homer in the first for Virginia, his third of the season.
Richmond scored a single run in the second and another in the third on ahome run by junior DH Manny Cicchiello (Weathersfield, CT/Loomis-Chaffee),his second of the year, to narrow the margin to 4-2.Virginia got home runs by freshman outfielder Ben Himes (Austin,TX/Westlake), his fourth, and freshman DH Robert Word (Knoxville, TN/Webb),his first, in a three-run fifth inning. The Cavs scored one in the fifthand Wyant belted a three-run homer in the sixth, his fourth of the season,to give Virginia the 11-2 lead.
Sophomore righthander Dan Street (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley) was thewinner in relief for Virginia, entering in the fourth and going 4.2 inningswith one hit, no runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
Freshman shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, MD/Liganore) had three hitfor the Spiders.
Richmond will host Maryland on Wednesday, March 29 at 3:00 p.m. at PittField.
