WILMINGTON, N.C. — The University of Virginia’s Elise Mitchell (Narvon,Pa./Garden Spot) set her second school record of the season as she won thehammer throw at the East Carolina Relays last weekend. She was joined inthe winner’s circle by Bill Johnston (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken), whoalso set a school record in the hammer throw.

Mitchell threw 51.86 (170′ 2″), just edging past Lauren Connolly’sthrow of 51.30 set in 1995. Inge Jorgensen (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) and Hillary Wilson (East Claridon, Ohio /Hawken) also competedin the hammer for Virginia, with Jorgensen finishing fifth and Wilsonsixth. Jorgensen threw 44.90 (147′ 4″) and Wilson tossed 41.90 (137′ 5 1/2″)

Mitchell also competed in the shot, taking sixth with a throw of12.56m, while Jorgensen took second in the discus at 44.66 (146′ 6″), justbeating out Wilson who tossed 44.49 (145′ 11″).

Johnston’s toss smashed the second-oldest men’s outdoor record atVirginia, sailing over 11 feet past the old school record set by by PhilVincenzes in 1979. Johnston’s throw of 56.66 (185′ 11″) was also more thanthree meters farther than the runner-up in the event.

Tim Bilmanis (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) was also a winner atthe meet, taking top honors in the discus with a throw of 47.56 (156’1/2″). J.D. Murdock (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood)also competed for the Cavaliers in the discus, taking fifth with a toss of41.10 (134′ 10″).
