CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Third-year right fielder Meaghan Young(Shrewsbury,Mass./Shrewsbury) went four for six with two RBI and two runs scored tolead the University of Virginia softball team to 1-0 and 4-3 wins overUMBCWednesday afternoon, March 29 at The Park. The Cavaliers won the firstgame of the doubleheader 1-0 and then took the nightcap 4-3. With thetwovictories, UVa has won four consecutive games and improves to 15-25 ontheseason. The Retrievers fall to 12-15.
In the opening game, fourth-year pitcher Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham,Pa./Central Bucks East) fired a two-hit shutout in gaining her fourthvictory of the season against nine losses. It marked UVa’s thirdconsecutive shutout. Quinn allowed just two singles and a walk whilestriking out six batters. UMBC’s Crystal Ray was the hard-luck loser asshe allowed just one run on three hits.
Virginia scored the lone run of the game in the third inning.First-yearshortstop Johanna Kaiser (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) led off the bottomofthe third inning with a single to right field. First-year centerfielderKatie Weinberg (Reston, Va./South Lakes) sacrificed Kaiser to second andthen Young delivered Kaiser with the game’s lone run with a triple tocenter field. The Retrievers threatened to score in the top of thefifth,but Quinn got the final two outs of the inning with runners on secondandthird.
In the second game, Young went 3-4 with a RBI and two runs scored toleadUVa to a 4-3 victory. Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga)pitched two perfect innings in relief of second-year Kristen Dennis(Encinitas, Calif./ La Costa Canyon) to gain the victory. Zagol (8-8)struck out four of the six batters she faced. Dennis allowed three runsonfour hits in six-plus innings of work. She struck out seven batters andwalked two. Jackie Ruffin took the loss for UMBC as she gave up allfourruns on 11 hits.
The Cavaliers took a 3-0 lead after three innings of play as they platedsingle runs in each of the first three innings. Young scored the ‘Hoosfirst run on a sacrifice fly by Dennis in the first inning. Young’stripleto center field in the second inning plated second-year left fielderKellyMcCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin). In the third inning, Virginiaincreased its lead to 3-0 on Dennis’ solo home run to left center field.
The Retrievers came back to knot the game at 3-3 in the top fifth onLisaBoone’s three-run triple. The Cavaliers answered with the game-winningrunin the bottom of the sixth. Young led off the inning with a single toleftcenter and advanced to second on fourth-year second baseman Amy Peay’s(Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) sacrifice bunt. First-year designatedplayerRuby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) drove in Young with thegame-winning run with a single to right center.
Virginia returns to action on Saturday, April 1 when it opens ACC playwitha 1:00 p.m. game against North Carolina at The Park. The two teamscontinue the series with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
