CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The 61st-ranked University of Virginia women’stennis team won the final two doubles matches to erase a 4-3 deficit andregister a 5-4 victory over the Spiders of Richmond at Sheridan SnyderTennis Center in Charlottesville. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to10-5 on the season.
The match was knotted at 3-3 after singles play and Richmond took a4-3 advantage by winning the #1 doubles match. The Cavaliers fought backand won the final two doubles matches to secure the 5-4 victory.
The ‘Hoos split three of six singles matches against Richmond. At #1singles, second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) posted a 6-4, 6-3victory over Elizabeth Cascarillo. Virginia third-year Christie Schweer(Houston, Texas/Memorial) fell to the Spiders’ Janelle Williams 6-2, 6-4 at#2. In the third singles slot, first-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh,N.C./Broughton) was victorious 7-5, 7-5 at over Vanessa Bagnato.Third-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian) lost toJodi Kenoyer 6-2, 6-3 at #4. First-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn,N.J./Millburn) found tough competition at the #5 slot, losing 6-2, 6-3 toElyse Salahi. UVa completed singles play with third-year Kelly Weaver’s(Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) 7-5, 6-3 win at #6 over Wesley Kohl.
The Cavaliers held off the Spiders by winning two of three doublesmatches to capture the win. Cook and Schweer lost at #1 doubles toRichmond’s Cascarillo and Williams 8-2, but UVa’s #2 and #3 doubles tandemscame through in the clutch. Second-year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./BishopIreton) and O’Donnell defeated Kenoyer and Monika Peetes at #2 doubles 8-4.In #3 doubles, Tuchband and Weaver clinched the match with an 8-6 victoryover Salahi and Bagnato 8-6.
Virginia returns to ACC action on April 1 when it competes against GeorgiaTech in Atlanta, Ga. at 10:30 a.m. The Cavaliers will travel to Clemsonthe next day to take on the Tigers at 12:00 noon.
