CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — University of Virginia fourth-year swimmerEmily Carrig (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) has been named to the 2000 GTEAcademic All-District III Women’s University Fall/Winter At-Large SecondTeam, as announced recently. Carrig is one of 10 student-athletes named tothe second team, while 10 individuals were also named to the first team.
Carrig recently earned first-team All-America honors at the NCAAChampionships held in Indianapolis as a member of Virginia’s 800-meterfreestyle relay team finished eighth with a time of 8:05.54. This season,Carrig also helped the Cavaliers win the 800 free relay crown at the ACCChampionships with a time of 7:16.63, the second fastest time in schoolhistory. Carrig holds the Cavaliers’ top time this season in the 200freestyle (1:49.90). She served as a tri-captain of the 1999-2000 women’sswimming and diving team.
This is Carrig’s first time being named to the GTE AcademicAll-America team, but she is far from unfamiliar with academic honors. Thechemistry major has been selected to the ACC Academic Honor Roll her firstthree years at Virginia. She is also a lifetime member of the NationalHonor Society and has been selected to UVa’s Academic Athletic Honor Rollevery semester.
Carrig is a four-time All-American, including a three-time memberof UVa’s 800 freestyle relay team. Her fourth All-America honor came as amember of the ‘Hoos 400 free relay team in 1997. Three of the four yearsshe has competed in the NCAA Championships she has earned All-Americahonors. Carrig is also an eight-time ACC champion. She is the formerschool record holder in the 200 butterfly (2.00.10) and is second all-timein the 200 freestyle (1:48.73).
To be nominated for GTE Academic All-America honors, astudent-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. Noathlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic andacademic standings in his/her career. District III is consists of schoolsfrom the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina andVirginia. Student-athletes from cross country, gymnastics, skiing, soccer,swimming, rifle, field hockey, and fencing are eligible for the Fall/WinterAt-Large Team.
