FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – University of Virginia second-year swimmer Ed Moses(Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) turned in yet another outstanding performance ashe won the 200-meter breaststroke at the Phillips 66 National Championshipsin Federal Way, Washington, late Wednesday evening, March 29. Moses wonthe 200 breast with a time of 2:13.86, nearly half of a second ahead ofKyle Salyards, who entered the finals as the top seed. The Phillips 66Nationals are being swum in long course meters (50-meter pool). TheNational Championships, which run through April 1, are being held at theWeyerhaeuser/King County Aquatic Center.
Moses, who set short course (25-meter pool) world records in the 100 and200-meter breaststroke at the NCAA Championships last week, ledwire-to-wire in earning the gold medal in the 200 breast with his time of2:13.86. Salyards was second with a time of 2:14.32. In the prelims ofthe 200 breast, Moses clocked a time of 2:17.09 and entered the finals asthe second seed behind Salyards (2:16.36).
At the NCAAs in Minneapolis, Moses won the 100-meter breaststroke with aworld record time of 57.66 on March 24, and then set another world recordin winning the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:06.40 on March 25.Moses became Virginia’s first swimmer to win two NCAA titles. Prior toMoses, the only other male UVa swimmer to win a NCAA title was ShamekPietucha, who won the 200 butterfly title in 1999.
Moses swims in the 100-meter breaststroke on Friday, March 31. Prelimswill be held in the morning, followed by the finals in the evening.
