PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Virginia Cavaliers had a two-goal lead inthe first half but the Tigers rallied to tie the score and then take the leadand hold on for victory. The Cavaliers were led by Frances Segarra’s (GlenMills, Pa./West Chester East) 13 saves and Ashley Widger’s (Berwyn,Pa./Conestoga) six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Jamie Haas(Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) scored twice, tying her with the school recordfor consecutive games scored with 27.
Princeton jumped on the board first as Charlotte Kenworthy bounced in ashot from the 8 just over a minute into the game. Virginia’s Jill Hansen(Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) caused a turnover on the next Princetonpossession and got the balll to Haas, who converted a free position at 25:43to tie the game. The Cavaliers went ahead as Segarra made the save on aPrinceton 8-meter and got the ball to the attack, where Lauren Aumiller(Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) worked free in the arc and scored sixminutes into the game. The Tigers tied the score just over a minute later asKenworthy converted a free position.
Virginia’s Mills Hook (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) scored two consecutivegoals to give the Cavaliers a two-goal cushion. The first one came courtesyof a tipped pass by Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) that ricocheted into thecage at 17:16. Five minutes later Alissa DeCarlo (Glen Mills, Pa./GarnetValley) caused a turnover in the defensive third and got the ball to theattack where Haas fed Hook for a score at 12:50, causing the Tigers to take atimeout.
Princeton pulled within one as Lauren Simone converted a Kim Smith feedat 9:53, but Virginia went up by two again as Hansen alertly picked up aloose ball and stuffed it in the cage with 6:53 to play in the half. But theTigers rallied to tie the score at halftime as Smith scored on a drive tothe cage and then Hilary Maddox stuffed in a crease feed in an open cage withjust 48 seconds to play in the half.
Virginia opened the scoring in the second half as Haas scored on a secondfree position seven minutes into the half. Princeton went on a three-goal runto take the lead 8-6 at 11:04. The Cavaliers pulled within one at 6:04 asKelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) took a feed from Hook ona fast break, but it was not enough.
With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 6-3 overall and will face the TempleOwls tomorrow in Philadelphia.
