CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team will openthe Atlantic Coast conference portion of its 2000 schedule by hosting NorthCarolina in single games on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2 at The Park inCharlottesville. On Saturday (April 1), hot dogs and Coke will be givenaway to the first 100 spectators. Prizes will also be given out throughoutthe game.
Virginia stands at 15-25 on the season, but has won its last four games,including three by shutout. UVa swept doubleheaders from Harvard and UMBCon Tuesday and Wednesday, March 28 and 29, respectively, at The Park. UVaposted 4-0 and 8-0 shutout wins over Harvard on Tuesday. On Wednesday, theCavaliers defeated UMBC 1-0 and 4-3. North Carolina enters the weekendwith a 29-13 record. The Tar Heels have won three of their last four games.
The two teams split a pair of games last season in Chapel Hill, N.C. NorthCarolina won the first game 4-2 on April 3, but the Cavaliers rebounded toearn the split with a 4-3 victory on April 4. North Carolina leads theall-time series 23-37-1.
Second-year first baseman/pitcher Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./LaCosta Canyon) leads the team in hitting with a .308 average (33-107). Sheis also 3-8 with a 1.96 ERA as a pitcher. First-year shortstop Ruby Rojas(Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) is second on the team in hitting with a .305batting average. Third-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury,Mass./Shrewsbury) is the team’s hottest hitter. She is currently batting.268 with a team-high 38 hits, of which 13 are extra-base hits, includingfive triples. Second-year left fielder Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./UpperDublin) leads the team with 20 stolen bases in 22 attempts and is alsobatting .286 (21-74).
Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) leads the team with eightvictories in 16 decisions and has also posted a team-best 1.77 ERA. She istied with fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East)for team high honors in complete games with eight. Zagol has struck out 84batters in 99 innings of work.
As a team, North Carolina is batting .317 with 92 extra-base hits,including 29 home runs. Michelle Semmes leads the Tar Heels with a .384batting average, while Kelly Ramsey is hitting .374. Natalie Anter topsthe club with nine home runs. Radara McHugh is UNC’s top pitcher. She hasposted a 13-4 record with a 0.93 ERA.
