Philadelphia, Pa. – The Cavaliers (7-3) used eight different goal scorers toturn back a determined Temple squad and defeat the #18 Owls 13-5 today.Five players scored twice for Virginia, and Gina Sambus (Garden City,N.Y./Garden City) scooped up seven ground balls and had four draw controlsfor the Cavaliers while Stephy Samaras (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) causedthree turnovers to lead the Hoos.
Virginia jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first four minuteson a pair of free position goals. Mills Hook (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s)converted a free position at 27:14. Sambus won the ensuing draw and drew ashooting space foul which she converted less than a minute later.
Temple got on the board with a cut to the crease at 20:22. The Owlstied the game seven minutes later as Jen Jefferson made good on an 8-meterwith 13:48 to play.
The Cavalier offense got untracked and scored three goals in a 2:24span to take control of the game. Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre DamePrep) scored on a free position to start the streak. On the draw theCavaliers got control and Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) was fouled in thearc. Her goal on the 8-meter was the fourth consecutive goal scored byVirginia from the free position and gave the Cavaliers a 4-2 lead. Lessthan a minute later the Aumiller sisters connected for a goal. LaceyAumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) fed her sister Lauren on thecrease who quicksticked the ball into the cage for a 5-2 lead at 10:05,forcing the Owls to take a timeout.
Out of the timeout the Owls got control and worked the ball intotheir offensive end. Jefferson picked up a loose ball in the arc andstuffed it in the cage to break the Virginia streak. Sambus answered theOwl goal with her second of the game with 6:45 to play in the half, sendingthe Cavaliers to the lead at the break 6-3.
Virginia won the opening draw of the second half and LaurenAumiller fed Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./ Woodstock Union) who wasstreaking in from the top just 54 seconds into the stanza. Three minuteslater Temple’s Kelly Ruch took a feed from Robin Keevan to pull the Owlswithin three, but again Lauren Aumiller assisted and the Cavaliers wentback up by four. Aumiller fed a streaking Hook for the eighth Cavalier goal.
Sambus caused a turnover on the restraining line and got the ballto Hansen who forced a shooting space foul at 17:36 which she converted fora 9-4 lead. Just two minutes later Jefferson completed a hat trick with an8-meter goal of her own, but it would be all the scoring Temple would mountfor the rest of the day.
The Cavaliers got the ball back on a failed clear by Temple andSarah Gercke (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield) scored on an8-meter for a 10-5 lead with 13:16 to play. Just over three minutes laterFrances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) picked up a loose ballin front of the cage and started a transition that was finsihed by LaceyAumiller off an assist from Cangemi. Segarra also started the next play,again finished by Aumiller, as she made a save and started a transitionthat saw Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) draw a shootingspace foul on the center hash. Lindsay fed Lacey Aumiller who was down lowon the reset and Aumiller scored her second goal of the game with 3:36 toplay.
With under a minute to play, Hansen caused a turnover as Temple wastransitioning into the offense and got the ball to Cangemi who rolled thecrease for a goal with just 19 seconds to play for the final score of 13-5.
Segarra had seven saves in the cage for the Cavaliers and alsopicked up five ground balls. Virginia will host #4 James Madison onWednesday, April 5 at Klockner Stadium at 7:00.
