ATLANTA, Ga. – The 36th-ranked University of Virginia men’s tennis teamlost a 5-2 decision to the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech on Saturday,April 1 at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta. With the loss, theCavaliers fall to 12-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Atlantic CoastConference. Georgia Tech improves to 10-7 overall and 4-1 in the ACC.
The match started with doubles play and the Cavaliers could onlywin one of the three doubles matches against the Yellow Jackets. Bywinning two doubles matches, Georgia Tech took a 1-0 lead heading into thesix singles matches. The Yellow Jackets won four of the six singlesmatches for the 5-2 victory over the Cavaliers.
In doubles action, third-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./TheLovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill),currently ranked No. 16, won at #1 doubles over Georgia Tech’s Tim Bibbyand Romain Coirault 8-6. At #2 doubles, the tandem of fourth-year JohnWinter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker(Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) fell to Sergio Aguirre and Robert Wright bya score of 8-3. To round out doubles action, third-year Robert Abendroth(Lafayette, La./St. Stephens) and third-year Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill,N.C./Chapel Hill) fell to the Yellow Jacket’s David Wright and RogerAnderson 9-7 at #3.
In singles play, No. 4 Vahaly defeated Aguirre in two sets 6-0, 6-4at #1. No. 49 Montgomery was victorious over GT’s Jason Jeong 6-4, 7-5 (5)at the #2 slot. Winter and Croker lost their singles matches at the #3 and#4, respectively. Winter lost 6-2, 6-3 to Anderson, while Croker dropped a6-4, 6-4 decision to David Wright. Hunter, at #5 singles, fell to Coirault6-2, 6-4. Georgia Tech’s Robert Wright posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over UVasecond-year Jason Romesburg (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) at #6.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday, April 2 when it travels toClemson, S.C., for a 2:30 p.m. match against the 37th-ranked Tigers. TheCavaliers return to Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center on Saturday, April 8 whenthey host North Carolina State at 1:00 p.m.
