CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – North Carolina used a four-run third inning and afive-run sixth to defeat Virginia 11-6 in Atlantic Coast Conferencesoftball action Sunday afternoon, April 2, at The Park inCharlottesville.With the loss, UVa falls to 15-27 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. The TarHeels improve to 31-13 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
The two teams both scored a run in the first inning and then theCavaliersjumped out to a 3-1 lead after two innings. Virginia second-year firstbaseman Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./ La Costa Canyon) platedfirst-year shortstop Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) with adoublein the first inning for the Cavaliers’ first run of the game. In thesecond, an infield single by fourth-year second baseman Amy Peay(Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) gave Virginia a 2-1 lead. Rojas was thenhitby a pitch with the bases loaded that scored second-year designatedplayerKelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin), giving UVa a 3-1 lead.
UNC scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead forgood, 5-3. The big hit of the inning was a two-out, two-run single byRosie Gustavson. The ‘Hoos narrowed the deficit to 5-4 with a run inthebottom of the fourth inning on a bases loaded single by fourth-year leftfielder Jen Krill (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington) that drove inMcCabe.
North Carolina stretched its lead to 10-4 with five runs in the top ofthesixth inning. In the inning, the Tar Heels used four hits and a pair ofVirginia errors to score the five runs. Beth Bates and Quinn Porter hadRBI singles in the inning. The Tar Heels scored their 11th run of thegamein the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh,third-yearright fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) hit hersecondhomer in as many days and Dennis had a double that plated Peay to makethefinal score 11-6.
UNC’s Michael Parrot earned the win with 5.2 innings of work in reliefofstarter Erin Joseph. Parrot allowed three runs on 11 hits. Fourth-yearChrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) took the loss. Sheallowed four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.
For Virginia, Peay was 3 for 5, while Dennis had two doubles and two RBIinfour at-bats. McCabe was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Krill added apair of hits and a RBI in four plate appearances.
Michelle Semmes was 3 for 5 with three runs for UNC. Kelly Ramseyregistered two hits, two runs and two RBI, while Bates drove in two runswith two hits.
Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, April 4 when travels to Libertyfora 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
