UVa Women’s Tennis Falls To Clemson, 5-4

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 55th-ranked University of Virginia women’s tennis teamlost to 35th-ranked Clemson 5-4 on Sunday, April 2, in Clemson, S.C. Thematch began at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center, but had to be moved to theClemson Indoor Tennis Center because of rain. With the loss, the Cavaliersfall to 10-7 overall and 0-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Clemsonimproves to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.

With the match tied at 3-3 after singles play, the 35th-rankedTigers won two of three doubles matches to secure the 5-4 victory.

In singles play, the ‘Hoos earned wins at the #1, #2 and #5 singlesslots. At #1 singles, second-year Amy O’Donnell’s (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah)opponent Carmina Giraldo retired with O’Donnell leading 3-0 in the firstset. Virginia third-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) wasleading 6-2, 4-1 when her opponent Cath Galvin retired. The Cavaliers’third singles win came at #5 as first-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn,N.J./Millburn) posted a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 come-from-behind victory overChristina Oldock.

At #3 singles, UVa first-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh,N.C./Broughton) lost 6-3, 6-1 to Renata Brito. UVa lost three-set matchesat #4 and #6 singles. Third-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./LakeWorth Christian) lost to Clemson’s Laurence Jayet 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, while,third-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) fell to the Tigers’ AnnaSavitskaya 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

In doubles play, UVa was only able to win the #2 match. O’Donnell andsecond-year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./Bishop Ireton) teamed to defeatSavitskaya and Oldock 8-5. At #1 doubles, Cook and Schweer lost to Britoand Jayet 8-3, while Tuchband and Weaver dropped an 8-6 decision to AnaStiglic and Cynthia Clausen.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday, April 8, when it hosts 11th-rankedDuke at 11:00 a.m. at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
