CLEMSON, S.C. – The 36th-ranked University of Virginia men’stennis team lost a 5-2 decision to the 35th-ranked Tigers of Clemson onSunday evening, April 2 at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Facility. Rain forcedthe match to be moved indoors. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 12-5on the season and 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tigers improvetheir record to 14-12 overall and are 4-1 in the ACC.
The match started with doubles play where the Tigers swept allthree matches to take the 1-0 lead over UVa. Virginia’s two victories camein singles play. Clemson won four of the six singles matches to secure the5-2 victory over Virginia.
In doubles action, third-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./TheLovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill),currently ranked 16th, fell at #1 doubles to Clemson’s 11th-ranked JoshGoffi and Darren Knight 8-6. At #2 doubles the tandem of fourth-year JohnWinter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker(Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) lost to Tomasz Boniecki and Luis Garcia by ascore of 9-8. To round out doubles action, first-year Michael Duquette(Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) and third-year Brian Hunter (ChapelHill, N.C./Chapel Hill) fell to the Tigers’ Sandon Barth and Eric Cohn 8-5at #3.
In singles play the Cavaliers won at #1 and #5, but lost the otherfour singles matches. No. 4 Vahaly defeated Goffi in two sets 7-5, 6-1 at#1, while Hunter was victorious over Micah Thompson 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at #5.No. 49 Montgomery lost a 6-0, 7-5 decision at the #2 slot to No. 45 TomaszBoniecki. Winter and Croker lost their singles matches in three sets atthe #3 and #4 slots, respectively. Winter dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 decisionto Brad Emendorf, while Croker fell to Garcia 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Clemson’sBarth posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Duquette at #6.
Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, April 4 when it travels toCollege Park, Md., to take on the University of Maryland at 2:00 p.m. TheCavaliers return to the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center on Saturday, April 8when they host North Carolina State at 1:00 p.m.
