Men's Tennis Posts 6-1 Victory Over Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 36th-ranked University of Virginia men’stennis team snapped its two-match losing streak with a 6-1 victory overMaryland Tuesday afternoon (April 4) in College Park, Md. With thevictory, the Cavaliers improve to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the AtlanticCoast Conference. Maryland falls to 2-8 on the season and 0-5 in ACC play.
The match started with doubles play where the Cavaliers swept allthree matches to take the 1-0 lead over the Terrapins. Virginia then wonfive of six singles matches for the 6-1 victory.
In doubles action, third-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./TheLovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill),currently ranked 16th, rebounded from a loss to a higher-ranked Clemsontandem on Sunday (April 2) to defeat Chris Chiu and Jonathan Murchison 8-1at #1 doubles. Third-year Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) andfourth-year John Winter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) were pairedtogether for the first time this season and posted an 8-2 victory at #2doubles over Maryland’s Peter Harjes and Luan Nguyen. At #3 doubles,fourth-years Nick Acquavella (New York, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) and ChrisChatham (Pebble Beach, Calif./Robert Louis Stevenson) registered an 8-2 winover Larry Chou and Dan Kenshalo. The doubles appearance is the springseason debut for Chatham, who has been out since mid-fall with an Achillestendon injury.
In addition to changes in the doubles lineup, second-year headcoach Dick Stockton used just three of his regular singles players withonly Vahaly playing in his normal singles slot. Vahaly, ranked fourth inthe nation, recorded a 6-1, 7-5 win over Chiu at #1. Winter moved from #3singles to #2 and defeated Chou 6-1, 6-1. Hunter, who usually plays #5singles, jumped up to #3 and posted a 7-5, 6-0 win over Harjes. TheCavaliers’ lone loss of the match came at #4 singles where Maryland’sNguyen defeated UVa first-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach,Va./Norfolk Academy) 6-4, 6-4. At #5 singles, second-year Jason Romesburg(Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) beat Kenshalo 6-3, 6-2 and fourth-year JeffDawkins (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at #6singles.
Virginia returns to action on Thursday, April 6 when it travels toRichmond to take on Virginia Commonwealth at 3:00 p.m. The Cavaliersreturn to the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center on Saturday, April 8 when theyhost N.C. State at 1:00 p.m.
