CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Cavaliers’ Frances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./WestChester East) made 14 saves to set a new season high, but Virginia stilfell to the fourth-ranked Dukes 11-8 tonight in Charlottesville. Amy Fromal(Folsom, Pa./Ridley) had nine ground balls and five caused turnovers tohelp lead the Cavalier cause and Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre DamePrep) had a hat trick to lead the Hoos in scoring.
JMU got on the board first with a goal by Lisa Staedt, but Virginiagot a pair of goals in just over a minute to take the lead.Mills Hook(Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s)caused a turnover on a Madison clear attempt andgot the ball to Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) who scoredto put Virginia on the board. The Cavaliers went up 2-1 just over a minutelater as Fromal won the draw control and worked the ball down to theoffensive end. Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) fed Lauren Aumilleron the crease for a quickstick and the lead.
The Dukes went ahead on a pair of goals in a 45 second span. Staedtscored her second goal off a feed from McNevin Molloy 15 seconds afterAumiller’s goal, and then on the ensuing draw Jess Marion ran down thecenter of the field off the draw and scored at 20:21 to put the Dukesahead.
Lauren Aumiller then scored a pair of goals in a 43 second spanherself to put the Cavaliers up 4-3. After a Cavalier turnover, Fromalcaused a turnover on the Madison clear and fed Aumiller at the restrainingline, who ran it down the center and scored to tie the game. She got theensuing draw and worked the ball downfield where Kelly Allenbach (WestChester, Pa./Henderson)fed her on the crease for a quickstick goal at17:43. Madison converted a free position goal by Julie Martinez to tie thescore at 16:12.
The Cavaliers then went on a two-goal streak to move ahead 6-4 asGina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) caused a turnover in the arcand the Cavaliers cleared the ball downfield where Lauri Kenis (Havertown,Pa./ Haverford) was awarded a free position that she converted for the 5-4lead. Virginia went up by two at 8:01 after Segarra made a save on apoint-blank shot and the Cavaliers brought the ball down on offense whereSambus flipped a shot into the net, forcing the Dukes to take a timeout.
But JMU scored the final two goals of the half and the first threeof the second half, including three consecutive by Martinez, to take thelead for good. Amy Brew’s goal from McNevin Molloy at 14:58 gave the Dukesa three-goal lead and forced the Hoos to take a timeout.
The Cavaliers scored two minutes after the timeout as Haas bouncedin a shot from the right side to pull within two. The Cavaliers were ableto break the Dukes’ stall many times, but were unable to convert theturnovers into scoring chances. With just under five minutes to play, Mollydrove the crease and gave the Dukes a three goal lead. She increased thatlead to four with a crease feed from Kristin Dinisio at 2:16. Haasconverted a free position at 1:40 for the final score of 11-8.
Virginia next faces #3 Duke on Saturday, April 8 in Durham, N.C.Game time against the Blue Devils is 2:00 pm.
