COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The 60th-ranked University of Virginia women’s tennisteam defeated Maryland 5-4 for its first Atlantic Coast Conference win ofthe season Wednesday afternoon, April 5 in College Park, Md. With the win,the Cavaliers improve to 11-7 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic Coast Conferenceplay. Maryland falls to 6-8 overall and 0-4 in the ACC.
The match was tied at 3-3 after the six singles matches. UVa wonthe deciding point at #1 doubles to secure the victory. Both teamsdefaulted in one doubles match to make the final score 5-4 in favor ofVirginia.
In singles play, the ‘Hoos earned wins at the #4, #5 and #6 singlesslots. UVa third-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake WorthChristian) recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win over Stacy Walkowitz at #4 singles.First-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) notched a 6-3, 7-5win over Chrissie Terrill at #5. Third-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston,N.Y./Kingston) registered a default win at #6 singles.
The top of the Cavaliers’ singles lineup did not fare as well. At #1singles, second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) lost to 6-4, 6-7,6-3 decision to Delila Causevic. Virginia third-year Christie Schweer(Houston, Texas/Memorial) fell to Jessica Johnson 6-3, 6-4 at #2. UVafirst-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) lost 7-6, 5-7, 6-4to Catherine Valantin in the third singles slot.
In doubles play, the only match that was completed was at #1. The ‘Hoostop tandem of Cook and Schweer posted an 8-4 win over Causevic and Johnson.At #2 doubles, O’Donnell and second-year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./BishopIreton) defaulted to Walkowitz and Terrill, while Tuchband and Weaverearned a default victory at #3 doubles.
The Cavaliers return to action in on Saturday, April 8, when they host theBlue Devils of Duke at 11:00 a.m. at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. OnSunday, April 9, Virginia will host North Carolina at 1:00 p.m.
