RICHMOND, Va. — The 46th-ranked University of Virginia men’stennis team fell to state rival and 16th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth 5-1Thursday afternoon, April 6, at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond.With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 13-6 on the season, while the Ramsimprove to 18-4.
Virginia Commonwealth jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning two ofthree doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The Rams also won four ofthe five completed singles matches for the 5-1 victory.
In doubles action, third-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./TheLovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill),currently ranked 16th, fell at #1 doubles to VCU’s 13th-ranked DanielAndersson and Frank Moser 8-6. At #2 doubles the tandem of fourth-yearJohn Winter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker(Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) defeated Mats Norin and Mattias Hoglund 8-3.In the #3 doubles match, UVa first-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach,Va./Norfolk Academy) and third-year Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./ChapelHill) fell to the Rams’ Fernando Sanchez and Jose Sanchez 9-8.
In singles play, the Cavaliers’ Vahaly, ranked fourth in thenation, defeated No. 12 Moser 7-6, 6-3 for Virginia’s only point of thematch. At the #2 spot, No. 49 Montgomery lost to the nation’s top-rankedplayer, Andersson, 6-2, 6-1. Winter dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision toFernando Sanchez at #3 singles. At #4, Croker fell to No. 47 Jose Sanchez6-2, 6-3, while Hunter succumbed to Norin at #5, 6-4, 6-3. The #6 singlesmatch between Duquette and VCU’s Hoglund was not completed.
Virginia returns to action on Saturday, April 8 when it hosts N.C.State at 1:00 p.m. at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center
