DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team lost its openinggame of the North Carolina Invitational Tournament to host UNC 3-1 Saturdayafternoon (April 8) at Finley Field. The Cavaliers’ game vs. Radford,scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m., was rained out. UVa now stands at 17-28on the season, while the Tar Heels improved to 34-13.
North Carolina scored singles runs in the bottom of the first and secondinning to take a 2-0 lead. The ‘Hoos narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a run inthe top of the third. UNC closed out the scoring with a single run in thebottom of the sixth to make the final score 3-1.
Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) took the loss as sheallowed three runs on 10 hits. Zagol (8-9) struck out four batters andwalked four. Radara McHugh picked up the win for UNC as she gave up onlyfour hits and one unearned run. McHugh struck out six batters and walkedone.
Third-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury)registered two of UVa’s four hits in the game. First-year shortstopJohanna Kaiser (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) and first-year catcher BrittGore (Vienna, Va./James Madison) had Virginia’s other two hits. Gorescored the Cavaliers’ lone run of the game.
Crystal Henderson led North Carolina by going 4 for 4 with two runs scored,while Jen Klesaris was 2 for 3 with two RBI.
The Cavaliers conclude play in the North Carolina Invitational Tournamenton Sunday (April 9). UVa will make up Saturday’s rain out against Radfordand will also play Florida International before playing in either theconsolation or championship game.
