DURHAM, NC — The University of Virginia stormed back from a 5-0 deficit todefeat the #3 Duke Blue Devils 10-8 today in Durham. After Duke scored offthe draw at the 18:44 mark of the first period, the Cavaliers fashioned afour-goal streak to pull within one and outscored their conferenceopponents 6-2 in the second half. Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) notched ahat trick to lead the Cavaliers in scoring and added five ground balls.Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) had seven ground balls andTiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) and Lauren Aumiller(Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) each had three caused turnovers to leadVirginia defensively.
Duke burst out of the gates, scoring the opening goal on theopening possession of the game just over a minute into the contest. TheBlue Devils scored two more quick goals in a span of 1:38 putting them up3-0. At the 18:53 mark Duke was awarded a free position attempt which theyconverted for a 4-0 lead. On the ensuing draw the Blue Devils had a 2v1breakway and scored, forcing the Cavaliers to take a timeout.
From that point on the Cavaliers stayed in control with intensivedefensive pressure and a patient attack. Out of the draw Fromal foundSambus alone on the right side and Sambus put the Cavaliers on the board.Less than a minute later Fromal drove to the cage and was fouled, placingher on the 8. Fromal’s goal made the score 5-2.
With just over nine minutes remaining in the half Lauren Aumillerfound herself alone on the crease and her shot trickled into the cage. Offthe next draw, won by the Cavaliers, Aumiller fed Schummer whose bounceshot pulled the Cavaliers within one at 5-4 and forced the Blue Devils totake a time out.
Duke scored with just under six minutes to play in the first halfto give the Blue Devils a two-goal lead at the break at 6-4.
Virginia notched the opening goal of the second half with just over21 minutes to play after Stephy Samaras (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) caused aturnover in the Cavaliers’ defensive third and started a transition thatwas finished by Sambus’ pass to Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./WoodstockUnion).
Duke then went on a two-goal run in 2:31 to pull ahead 8-5 with16:21 to play, again forcing the Cavaliers to take a time out.
From that point on the Cavalier defense stepped up and did notallow the Blue Devils a shot the remainder of the game. On the draw afterthe timeout the Cavaliers got possession and Fromal forced a shooting spacefoul which she converted to pull Virginia within two at 8-6. Lauri Kenis(Havertown, Pa./Haverford) picked up a loose ball on the restraining lineand started a transition that was finished by Mills Hook (Baltimore,Md./’St. Paul’s) off a pass from Sarah Gercke (Charlottesville, Va./St.Anne’s-Belfield).
Virginia tied the game as Hansen picked up a loose ball and fedSamaras, who ran into the arc and was tripped, placing her on the 8. Herconversion of the free position tied the game at 8 with 11:20 to play.
The Cavaliers took the lead for good at 2:27 as Kelly Allenbach(West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) fed Fromal who rocketed a shot into thecorner for the 9-8 lead. Virginia got possession on the next draw andpatiently spread the attack. With just under a minute to play, Allenbachfound herself alone on the side of the cage and ran it in, scoring with 40seconds on the clock to give Virginia a two-goal margin and the final scoreof 10-8.
Frances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) made five saves.
