CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The 60th-ranked University of Virginiawomen’s tennis team fell 5-1 to the 13th-ranked Blue Devils of Duke onSaturday, April 8, at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville.With the loss, the Cavaliers’ record falls to 11-8 overall and 1-4 inAtlantic Coast Conference play. Duke improves its record to 15-5 overalland 4-1 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers’ lone victory came in singles action. Doubles playbegan but was suspended due to rain.
The ‘Hoos lost five of six singles matches to Duke. In the thirdsingles slot, UVa first-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton)comfortably defeated Hillary Adams 7-5, 6-1. At #1 singles, second-yearAmy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) fell 6-3, 6-1 to 21st-ranked MeganMiller. Virginia third-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial)lost 6-3, 6-1 to 30th-ranked Kathy Sell at #2. Duke’s Prim Siripipatdefeated third-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian)6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-1 at #4. First-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn,N.J./Millburn) lost her singles match at #5 in three sets, 6-1, 6-7 (8),6-1 to Brooke Siebel. Third-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston)defaulted at #6 singles with a leg injury to Ioana Plesu, who was leading5-2 in the first set.
Virginia returns to action Sunday, April 9 when it competes against37th-ranked North Carolina at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. Play isset to begin at 1:00 p.m.
