DURHAM, N.C. – Virginia used an eight inning pitching performance fromKevin Shrout along with a 19-hit offensive attack to defeat Duke 12-3Saturday at Jack Coombs Field. The loss drops Duke to 12-26 on theseason and 2-9 in the ACC while Virginia improves to 17-18-1 overall and5-6 in the ACC.
Game three of the three-game ACC series is Sunday at 1 p.m. at JackCoombs Field.
The Caveliers built a 4-1 lead with four runs in the fourth inning.Tim LaVigne’s RBI single, Ryan Kalamaya’s RBI single and Grant Mayer’stwo-RBI single to right field gave the Caveliers the lead. After Dukescored a run in the third on an error, Virginia came back with threemore runs in the sixth to go up 7-1. Robbie Marvin’s two RBI triple andJon Benick’s RBI single provided the scoring.
Virginia starter Kevin Shrout (4-1) earned the victory after throwing8.0 innings and allowing 11 hits and three runs. Alexander Starrpitched the final inning for Virginia.
Virginia sealed the win with four runs in the eighth inning includingLuis Giraldo’s solo home run, Ben Hime’s two-RBI home run and RyanKalamaya’s RBI single.
Virginia was led by Tim LaVigne’s 5-5, three run, two doubleperformance. Ryan Kalamaya went 3-6 with two RBI and two runs, GrantMayer finished 3-5 with two RBI, Robbie Marvin drove in two runs on a2-4 performance and both David Stone and Ben Himes recorded two hitsapiece.
Duke’s Larry Broadway hit his third home run of the season in the sixthinning. The Blue Devils were led offensively by J. D. Alleva’s 3-5 day.Wes Goodner went 2-4 with a run and Broadway went 2-4 with a run andRBI.
Duke starter Kevin Perry (3-4) took the loss after going the first 32/3 innings and allowing four runs and five hits. Steve Schroeder, BradDuPree and Wes Goodner combined to finish up the game for the BlueDevils.
