CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The 46th-ranked University of Virginiamen’s tennis team registered a 7-0 victory over Atlantic Coast Conferencerival N.C. State Saturday afternoon, April 8 at the Boar’s Head Sports Clubin Charlottesville. With the win, UVa improves to 14-6 overall and 4-2 inthe ACC. The Wolfpack drop to 9-13 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning all three doublesmatches to earn the doubles point. The Cavaliers continued theiroutstanding play by winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
In doubles action, third-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./TheLovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill),currently ranked 16th, won at #1 doubles 8-3 over the Wolfpack’s EricJackson and Keith Salmon. At #2 doubles, the tandem of fourth-year JohnWinter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker(Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) defeated Brian Cowman and Shaun Thomas 8-3.In the #3 doubles match, UVa first-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach,Va./Norfolk Academy) and third-year Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./ChapelHill) registered an 8-5 victory over NCSU’s Ryan Boward and Devang Desai.
In singles play, the Cavaliers posted straight-set victories in allsix matches. Vahaly, ranked fourth in the nation, defeated Jackson 6-4,6-3. At the #2 spot, No. 49 Montgomery won 6-3, 6-3 over N.C. State’sDevang Desai. Winter posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Salmon at #3 singles. At#4, Croker notched a 6-4, 6-4 win against Boward, while Hunter won 7-5, 6-2at #5 singles. Duquette won his match at #6 singles 6-4, 6-3 over BradKilgore.
Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, April 1l when it travels toBlacksburg, Va. for a 2:00 p.m. match against Virginia Tech.
