Virginia Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Elon, 13-1, 11-0

ELON COLLEGE, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team poundedout26 hits en route to 13-1 and 11-0 wins over Elon College Fridayafternoon,April 7 at East Field. Fourth-year center fielder Corinne Good(Ephrata,Pa./Ephrata) set the Virginia school record for games played with the202ndappearance of her career in the second game of the doubleheader. TheCavaliers registered 13 hits in each of their two wins on the day. UVanowstands at 17-27 overall, while Elon falls to 5-35.

Good tied Lori Reese’s (1996-99) school record of 201 games played inthefirst game of the doubleheader and then established the new record withher202nd career appearance in the nightcap.

The Cavaliers received a pair of outstanding pitching performances ingaining their 16th and 17th wins of the season. Fourth-year pitcherChrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) threw a two-hitter inearning her fifth win of the season in UVa’s 13-1 triumph in the firstgame. She struck out seven and walked just one in improving her recordto5-10. Second-year Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./ La Costa Canyon)losther bid for a no-hitter with two outs in the sixth inning in theCavaliers’11-0 victory in the nightcap. Dennis’ bid for her first careerno-hitterwas broken up by Pam Brock’s double with two outs in the bottom of thesixth. Dennis struck out six batters and walked three in improving to4-9on the year.

In the first game, Virginia trailed 1-0 after two innings, but took thelead for good with three runs in the top of the third inning. The ‘Hoosadded two runs in the top of the fourth and eight more runs in thefifth.The “mercy rule” was invoked after five innings. First-year shortstopJohanna Kaiser (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) was 3 for 3 with three runsanda RBI to lead the Cavaliers’ offensively. Dennis helped her own causewitha pair of hits and two RBI. Third-year right fielder Meaghan Young(Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) added two hits and scored a pair of runs,while first-year designated player Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./MaterDei)also banged out two hits.

Virginia scored two runs in both the second and third innings and thenplated seven more runs in the top of the sixth for its 11-0, six-inningvictory in game two. Fourth-year third baseman Karen Breshears(Camarillo,Calif./Cornerstone Christian) was 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runsscoredin the second game. Dennis continued her hot hitting with a pair ofhits,while second-year left fielder Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./UpperDublin)was 2 for 3 with two RBI. Good was the fourth Cavalier with at leasttwohits as she went 2 for 4.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9 when itcompetes in the North Carolina Invitational Tournament in Chapel Hill,N.C.UVa opens with North Carolina at 12 noon on Saturday, then plays Radfordat4:00 p.m.
