DURHAM, N.C. (April 9) — Junior Ryan Caradonna threw a nine-hit complete game and the Duke offense generated 10 runs off 12 hits as the Blue Devils won a 10-1 decision Sunday against Virginia at Jack Coombs Field. With the win, Duke improves to 13-26 overall and 3-9 in the ACC while Virginia drops to 17-19-1 overall and 5-7 in the ACC.
Caradonna (4-5) threw his second career complete game. He struck out five batters and limited the Virginia offense to nine hits and one run in his 35 batters faced.
Duke took command early with three runs in the first inning when David Mason led off with a walk, Jeff Becker singled to left field and Kevin Kelly walked to load the bases. Wes Goodner drove home Mason with a sacrifice fly RBI to leftfield and Matt Lynch’s infield single drove in both Becker and Kelly.
The Blue Devils went up 4-0 in the third on Wes Goodner sacrifice bunt and took a 7-0 lead when Jeff Becker scored on a wild pitch and Gideon Thompson’s RBI single to left field in the fifth and a Jeff Becker RBI triple in the sixth. J.D. Alleva put the game away with a two-run home run in the eighth.
Meanwhile Caradonna kept getting the Cavaliers out. It took the final inning for Virginia to score on a Ben Himes RBI single. It was the second complete game of Caradonna’ season and career. The Tampa, Fla. native threw a 7.0 inning complete game against Brown on March 19. Jeff Becker led Duke with a 4-4, three run, RBI day. J.D. Alleva went 2-5 with two RBI and two runs, Wes Goodner finished 0-0 with three walks, two runs and two RBI, Kevin Kelly went 2-4 and Matt Lynch finished 1-3 with two RBI.
Virginia will return to action on Tuesday, April 11th when the Cavaliers compete in a doubleheader with Penn State at State College, Pa. beginning at 1:00 p.m. Duke plays at Davidson on Wednesday beginning at 3 p.m.
