CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The 60th-ranked University of Virginiawomen’s tennis team upset 37th-ranked North Carolina 6-3 Sunday afternoon,April 9 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville. The victorymarked the 200th career coaching win for UVa head coach Phil Rogers. TheCavaliers improve to 12-8 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conferencewith the victory. North Carolina drops to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the ACC.
Rogers, in his 18th season as Virginia’s head coach, has a careerrecord of 200-174. He has been UVa’s head coach in 200 of the tennisprogram’s 296 victories.
The Cavaliers clinched the team victory by winning five of sixsingles matches. UVa then won one of the three doubles matches to make thefinal score 6-3.
The ‘Hoos jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins at #1 and #2 singles.At #1, second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) posted a 6-2, 6-2win over UNC’s Jessica Zaganczyk. Virginia third-year Christie Schweer(Houston, Texas/Memorial) quickly followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win overCaroline Hill at #2. The Tar Heel’s Kendrick Bunn then won the #4 singlesmatch 0-6, 6-2, 6-0 over UVa third-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach,Fla./Lake Worth Christian) to make the score 2-1. First-year JenniferTuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) defeated Kate Pinchbeck at #5 singles6-4, 6-3 to give the Cavaliers a 3-1 advantage. In the #3 singles slot,UVa first-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) outlastedCourtney Zalinski 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to bring Virginia within one point of theteam victory. Third-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) clinchedthe victory by registering a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3 win over Kristen Koenig at#6 singles.
In doubles play, O’Donnell and second-year Christine Kim (McLean,Va./Bishop Ireton) beat Bunn and Pinchbeck 8-5 at #2 for the Cavaliers’sixth team point. At #1, Cook and Schweer lost to Marlene Mejia and ErinNiebling 8-6, while Tuchband and Williams dropped an 8-2 decision toZaganczyk and Zalinski.
UVa returns to action on Saturday, April 15 when it competesagainst N.C. State at 11:00 a.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
