BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team lost a pair ofgames to Virginia Tech by identical 5-3 scores at the Tech Softball Fieldin Blacksburg Tuesday afternoon (April 11). The Cavaliers hit four homeruns in the two games, including three in the second game, but they wereall solo homers. With the two losses, UVa falls to 18-32 on the season,while Virginia Tech improves to 28-15.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Hokies scores two runs in eachof the first two innings with the two runs in the second being unearned.The Cavaliers scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings tocut the deficit to 4-3, but the Hokies added an insurance run in the bottomof the sixth to make the final score 5-3.
Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) took theloss as she allowed five runs, only two earned, on six hits in 5.1 inningsof work. Quinn (6-11) struck out eight and walked three. Clarisa Crowell(15-5) picked up the win for Virginia Tech. She gave up three runs on sixhits.
Fourth-year center fielder Corinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) drove in thefirst UVa run with a single that scored first-year Katie Weinberg (Reston,Va./South Lakes) in the second inning. Third-year right fielder MeaghanYoung (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) scored in the second inning on asingle by first-year Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei). Fourth-yearthird baseman Karen Breshears (Camarillo, Calif./Cornerstone Christian)accounted for the ‘Hoos third run with a solo homer to left in the third.
In the nightcap, Virginia Tech broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in thebottom of the fifth inning en route to a 5-3 victory. All three UVa runscame on solo homers by three different players. First-year designatedplayer Stephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel) drove in herteam-leading 20th run of the season with a solo home run in the top of thesecond inning. First-year catcher Britt Gore (Vienna, Va./James Madison)put Virginia ahead 2-1 with a leadoff homer in the top of the third. Rojasadded the Cavaliers’ third solo homer of the game with one out in the topof the sixth to bring UVa within two runs, 5-3. In the top of the seventh,the ‘Hoos loaded the bases with no-outs, but Gore grounded into a 5-2-3double play and Young flew out to center to end the threat and the game.
Second-year Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) took theloss in relief of fourth-year starter Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga).In 2.1 innings of relief, Dennis (4-11) gave up three runs on four hits.Zagol pitched the first 3.2 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) onfive hits. Ashlee Dobbe grabbed the win for the Hokies with five inningsof one-run, four-hit pitching. Heather Terry started for Virginia Tech andgave up two runs on three hits in two innings.
UVa returns to action on Wednesday, April 12 when it hosts Campbell in adoubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. at The Park.
