BLACKSBURG, Va. — The 46th-ranked University of Virginia men’stennis team was upset by Virginia Tech 4-3 Tuesday afternoon (April 11) atthe Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg. The Hokies won the #3through #6 singles matches to earn the victory. With the loss, UVa fallsto 14-7 on the season, while Virginia Tech improves to 12-13.

Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning two of the threedoubles matches to earn the doubles point. The Cavaliers won the #1 and #2singles matches, but Virginia Tech won the other four singles matches toearn the team victory, 4-3. It is only the fifth time in 47 men’s tennismatches that UVa has fallen to Virginia Tech.

In doubles action, third-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./TheLovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill),currently ranked 16th, won at #1 doubles 9-7 over the Hokies’ Davor Dupljakand Saber Kadiri. At #2 doubles, the tandem of fourth-year John Winter(Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker (Alexandria,Va./St. Stephens) defeated Gerard Baynham and Andrew Vu 8-3. In the #3doubles match, UVa first-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./NorfolkAcademy) and third-year Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill)suffered an 8-5 loss to Virginia Tech’s Eddie Terzimehic and Jay Bruner.

In singles play, Vahaly and Montgomery were the only Cavaliers toearn wins. Vahaly, ranked fourth in the nation, defeated Dupljak 6-0, 6-2.At the #2 spot, No. 49 Montgomery won 6-1, 6-2 over Virginia Tech’sBaynham. At #3, Winter fell to Mike Kurz in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.Croker dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Bruner at #4, while Hunter suffered a6-4, 6-0 setback to Terzimehic at #5. Duquette lost his #6 singles matchto Kadiri 6-2, 7-5.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday, April 15 when it hosts19th-ranked North Carolina at 1:00 p.m. at the Sheridan Snyder TennisCenter. UVa then hosts fifth-ranked Duke at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 16.
