BLACKSBURG, Va. –Virginia’s Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep)controlled nine draws, scored five goals and added five assists to helppace the Cavaliers to a 17-9 decision over in-state rival Virginia Techtoday. Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) added four goals and a pair ofassists to go with five ground balls to aid the Virginia efforts.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 3-0 lead four minutes into the gamewith a pair of goals coming from Fromal. Virginia’s first goal came afterAshley Widger (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) caused a turnover in the defensivethird and sfarted a fast break which saw her pass to Jill Hansen(Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) who converted the fast break less than aminute into the game. Virginia’s second goal also came after a causedturnover, this one at the hands of Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./GardenCity) whose fast break saw Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) shotsaved but Fromal flicked in the rebound for a 2-0 lead. Fromal herselfstarted the third scoring play by causing a turnover in the defensive thirdand ran the break herself for the goal.
Virginia Tech then notched a pair of goals on fast breaks to pullwithin one, but it would be the closest the Hokies would come the remainderof the game as Virginia scored three goals, all by Lauren Aumiller, in atwo-minute span to pull away.
Fromal notched an assist on the fourth goal as she was awarded aneight-meter after winning the draw and working down to the arc. On therestart she fed a wide-open Lauren Aumiller on the crease with 19:25 toplay. After winning the ensuing draw, Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./NotreDame Prep) fed a quickstick feed to her sister for a 5-2 lead. LaurenAumiller completed her hat trick at the 17:24 mark as she converted a MollyCangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) crease feed for a 6-2 lead.Virginia Tech scored on the ensuing draw but the Cavaliers answered with agoal by Lacey Aumiller as she converted a pass from Laura Lindsay(Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) on an eight-meter setup. Lindsayscored the next goal with 12:14 remaining in the half as Lauren Aumillerhelped break a Hokie clear and fed Lindsay who ran in from the 20 for an8-3 lead. Tech then scored on a pair of free positions to cut the deficitto 8-5, but after the second goal Virginia’s Hansen won the draw and fed astreaking Mills Hook (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) who scored eight secondslater for a 9-5 lead. Stephy Samaras (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) startedVirginia’s tenth scoring play as she caused a turnover at the restrainingline and got the ball to Lauren Aumiller, who fed Haas on the crease topush the Cavaliers into double digits, where the score remained at halftime.
The Hokies scored less than a minute into the second half to cutthe margin to 10-6, but the Cavaliers scored the next five goals to pushthe margin to nine. Lauren Aumiller fed Fromal on the crease at 22:06 and56 seconds later Fromal fed Sambus who cut to the crease and converted thepass. Sisters Lauren and Lacey hooked up for the fourteenth Virginia goalwhich came on a free position restart at 18:23. Lacey Aumiller then scoredherself on an eight-meter at 16:15. Fromal converted a free position for a15-6 lead.
Tech stopped the run as they ran a fast break and converted it at9:50, but Virginia responded with two goals to go up 17-7 as LaurenAumiller notched a goal and an assist on the Cavaliers final two tallies.She converted an eight-meter at 6:39 and two minutes later fed a streakingSamaras for the ten-goal margin. Tech scored the final two goals of thegame to account for the final score of 17-9.
Samaras, WIdger, and Fromal led the team with three causedturnovers each while Sarah Gercke (Charlottesville, Va./St.Anne’s-Belfield) had six ground balls to lead the Cavaliers. FrancesSegarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) started the game and came outat halftime with two saves. Liz McCarthy (Palm Beach, Fla./Taft) played thefirst 15 minutes of the second half and had one save and one goal allowedwhile Mary Beth LaVerghetta (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) played thefinal 15 minutes and ended with five saves and three goals allowed.
