CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team split apair of games with Campbell University Wednesday afternoon (April 12) atThe Park in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers lost the first game 3-2, butbounced back to win the second game 5-0 behind the three-hit pitching offourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East). UVa nowstands at 19-33 overall, while Campbell is 17-27.
Quinn allowed just three singles in pitching her third shutout of theseason in leading Virginia to a 5-0 win in the second game. She struckout10 and walked just one in improving her record to 7-11. Campbell’sKathyFreaney took the loss as she allowed four unearned runs on five hits in2.2innings of work.
Second-year first baseman Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La CostaCanyon) led the ‘Hoos offensively with a 3 for 3 effort at the plate.Dennis hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning and alsoadded a double and a single. First-year shortstop Johanna Kaiser(Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) was 2 for 3 with two RBI, while first-yearthird baseman Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) added two hitsandscored a run. Fourth-year left fielder Jen Krill (Huntington Beach,Calif./Huntington) also had a pair of hits and scored a run for theCavaliers.
In the first game, Campbell scored three runs in the first inning andhungon to defeat UVa 3-2. Michelle Carey pitched the first four innings toearn the win, while Freaney picked up the save with three innings ofshutout relief. Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) wasthelosing pitcher. She allowed three runs on 10 hits in six innings ofwork.Zagol (8-11) struck out four batters and walked one.
The Fighting Camels received consecutive two-out RBI hits from ShannonO’Bryan, Tiffany Moyer and Leslie Standiford to take a 3-0 lead in thetopof the first inning. The Cavaliers plated a pair of runs in the bottomofthe fifth to cut the deficit to 3-2.
After first-year catcher Britt Gore (Vienna, Va./James Madison) andthird-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury)walked to lead off the fifth, Freaney came in in relief of Carey. Asacrifice bunt moved both UVa runners into scoring position and Rojasplated the two runs with a base hit to center to make the score 3-2.Dennis then reached on an error. After a fielder’s choice, Krillsingledto load the bases, but Freaney got out of the jam when fourth-yearcenterfielder Corinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) grounded out to third to endthe inning.
The Fighting Camel’s Brook Osterhage was the only player with more thanonehit in the first game as she went 3 for 3 with a run.
UVa returns to action on Saturday, April 15 when it travels to Atlantafora doubleheader against ACC rival Georgia Tech. The first game begins at1:00 p.m.
