CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — University of Virginia head swimming coachMark Bernardino has been selected by USA Swimming as an assistant coach forthe men’s United States’ National Junior Team. Bernardino will help coachthe USA team at the 2000 Junior Team International Competition inBarcelona, Spain, May 23-25. The coaching staff will assemble in ColoradoSprings, Colo., on May 18 and return home on May 26.
The men’s USA National Junior Team consists of boys 17 and underwho have met the qualifying standards. The fastest performer in each eventin the integrated results of the USA Swimming Spring and Summer NationalChampionships and the USA Swimming Summer Junior Championships will alsoautomatically be selected to the Junior National Team.
Bernardino is completing his 22nd season as UVa’s head coach. Hismen’s and women’s teams have a combined 302-138-1 record during his tenure,including 7-1 and 8-0 marks, respectively, in the 1999-2000 season. Thewomen’s team is 160-58-1 under Bernardino and has won 20 consecutive dualmeets dating back to the 1997-98 season. Bernardino’s men’s squads haveposted a 142-80 record. Virginia has won seven ACC Championships underBernardino, including the 2000 men’s title.
Bernardino’s Cavaliers have also been successful on the nationallevel. In the past two years, UVa swimmers have won the school’s firstfour national titles, including two by second-year Ed Moses (Burke,Va./Lake Braddock) at the 2000 Men’s NCAA Championships and one by CaraLane (Charlotte, Va./Providence) at the 2000 Women’s NCAAs. Moses, who setshort course world records in winning his titles in the 100 and 200-meterbreaststroke, is UVa’s first two-time national champion. Lane, who won the1500-meter freestyle, is the school’s first woman to win a NCAA title.
As a team, Virginia has recorded eight top-15 finishes at the NCAAChampionships. The women’s program has six of those top 15 finishes,including a ninth-place tie this past season. The men’s team recorded anall-time best 12th-place finish at the 2000 NCAAs.
