Cavalier Women Win Track Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Virginia hammer pair of ElieseMitchell (Narvon, Pa./Garden Spot) and Bill Johnston (Warwick, R.I./BishopHendricken) both set the record in the hammer throw for the third time thisseason at today’s Lou Onesty Invitational. Mitchell’s throw of 52.10m brokeher school record that she set earlier this season. Johnston had two tosseslonger than his two-week-old school record heave, and his first throw ofthe final round, 57.58m, was just shy of a meter longer than his record.Mitchell’s victory was the first of nine for the Cavaliers on the day asthey outdistanced Liberty by 31 points to claim the team title.
In all, the Cavaliers won five of the eight weight events today, asMitchell doubled in the shot put with a throw of 13.74m and Inge Jorgenson(New Wilmington, Pa./New Wilmington) won her second consecutive javelintitle with a 49.10 today. Brian Kollar (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial)made it a clean sweep in the jav with a heave of 68.98m, just 70cm short ofthe school record. Hilary Wilson (East Clarindon, OH/Hawken) made it4-for-4 on the women’s side, claiming the last event, the discus, with atoss of 49.24. Vika Osipenko (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was also a winnerin the field for the Cavaliers, leading a 1-2-4-5 run in the pole vault.Mitchell, Jorgenson, and Wilson also all qualified for the ECAC meets inthe events in which they won. Both Jorgenson and Kollar have alreadyqualified provisionally for the NCAA meet in June.
Virginia fared well on the track, taking four firsts on the women’sside. Kiamesha Otey (Quinton, Va./New Kent) won the 100m dash in 12.27 andNatalie Randolph (Washington, D.C./ Sidwell Friends) won the 400intermediates with a time of 1:01.51. Dana Coons (Vienna, Va./JamesMadison) won the 3000m in a n ECAC qualifying time of 9:57.18 en route towinning the event.
Sarah Folse (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) qualified for the ECACmeet in the 1500 with a time of 4:30.27.
