CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va — Second-ranked Virginia dominated the secondquarter against fifth-ranked Duke in men’s lacrosse Saturday night inKlockner Stadium and hung on to beat the Blue Devils 12-7, giving theCavaliers the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season championship for thesecond straight year.
Virginia (8-1, 3-0 in the ACC) extended two streaks with the win.The Cavaliers have now won eight consecutive games after an opening-dayloss to Syracuse, and have held opponents to eight or fewer goals in alleight of those games. The eight-game win string is the nation’s longest.
Tied at 2-all with just under seven minutes to play before thehalf, Virginia scored five straight goals to go into halftime ahead7-2.Attackman Conor Gill, who scored two goals and assisted on three othersfor the game, scored one and assisted Aaron Vercollone and A.J. Shannon inthe run. Two of the goals came in extra-man situations. The Cavaliersscored on four of six extra-man opportunites for the game.
Duke (8-3, 2-1) tallied three straight goals in the third quarterto cut Virginia’s margin to 7-5, but the Cavaliers’ Ian Shure stopped theDuke momentum by notching his lone goal of the contest. Shure came off ascreen in front and cleanly put David Jenkins‘ pass into the back of thenet. Hanley Holcomb scored his second goal of the game with 16 secondsremaining in the period to push UVa’s lead to 9-5 and keep the Blue Devilsat bay.
Jay Jalbert, Holcomb, and Shannon each scored two goals forVirginia, and Jalbert added two assists. T.J. Durnan led Duke with fourgoals. Greg Patchak had a goal and two assists.
The next games for both teams take place April 21 at the Universityof Maryland. Virginia plays North Carolina at 6 p.m. Duke plays Maryland at8:30 p.m. The winners plays Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
