ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Virginia softball team swept a pair of crucial games against Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon (April 15) at Glenn Field in Atlanta, Ga. The Cavaliers won the first game 4-2 and were victorious in the second game 4-1 behind the three-hit pitching of second-year Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon). UVa now stands at 21-33 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Georgia Tech is 25-26 and 3-5 in the ACC.
Third-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) recorded a pair of hits in the doubleheader to become Virginia’s all-time career base hits leader. With the two hits, Young now has 187 in her career to break the former record of 186 held by Elysa “Weezy ” Calderone (1993-96). Young equaled the record with a double in the fifth inning of the first game and then broke the record with a single in the fourth inning of the second game.
Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) worked a complete game and allowed only one earned run in UVa’s 4-2 victory in the first game. Dennis allowed only three hits and one run in Virginia’s 4-1 win in the second game. She struck out four and walked just two in improving her record to 5-11.
In the first game, Georgia Tech lead 2-1 before Virginia scored three runs in the fifth inning to secure the 4-2 victory. First-year shortstop Johanna Kaiser (Scottsdale, Az./Saguaro) had two hits and scored in the third inning on a wild pitch. Young and fourth-year second Amy Peay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) each belted a double in the fifth to drive in two of the ?Hoos four runs.
In the nightcap, fourth-year Karen Breshears led the ‘Hoos offensively with a 3 for 3 effort at the plate. Breshears had two doubles and a RBI. Fourth-year center fielder Corinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) singled in the second inning driving home Breshears to give the Cavaliers their first run of the game. Virginia scored again in the third inning when Breshears hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Peay, who reached on a single. First-year designated player Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) with two outs in the seventh, hit her second home run of the season. Dennis kept the inning alive with a two out single. First-year Stephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel) singled to drive in first-year Katie Weinberg (Reston, Va./South Lakes), who was pinch running for Dennis. Georgia Tech’s Anne Knobbe scored the lone Yellow Jacket run in the sixth inning with a solo home run.
Virginia will return to action on Saturday, April 22 when it travels to College Park, Maryland to take on the University of Maryland. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00p.m.
