CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The 43rd-ranked University of Virginiamen’s tennis team upset 16th-ranked North Carolina 6-1 Saturday afternoon,April 15 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville. In addition,Virginia third-year Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) won his29th singles match of the year to tie the UVa single season record, whichhe shares with Justin Smith. With the win, UVa improves to 15-7 overalland 5-2 in the ACC. The Tar Heels are now 14-4 overall and 5-2 in theconference.
Vahaly, who is the fifth-ranked singles player in the nation, wonhis 29th singles match of the season against just four losses in tying theschool record. Vahaly was 29-9 in singles play in the 1998-99 season totie Smith’s school mark.
Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning two of the threedoubles matches to earn the doubles point. The Cavaliers continued theiroutstanding play by winning all five of six singles matches for the 6-1triumph.
In doubles action, Vahaly and third-year Huntley Montgomery (ChapelHill, N.C./Chapel Hill), currently ranked 23rd, won at #1 doubles 8-4 overthe Tar Heel’s Greg Archer and Assaf Drori. At #2 doubles, the tandem offourth-year John Winter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-yearTommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) defeated David Cheatwood andTripp Phillips 8-5. In the #3 doubles match, Tyne Brownlow and MarcioPetrone registered a 9-8 win over UVa first-year Michael Duquette (VirginiaBeach, Va./Norfolk Academy) and third-year Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill,N.C./Chapel Hill).
In singles play, the Cavaliers posted straight-set victories in the#1, #2 and #3 matches. Vahaly, ranked fifth in the nation, defeated No. 30Phillips 6-1, 6-3. At the #2 spot, No. 51 Montgomery won 6-4, 6-2 overNorth Carolina’s Drori. Winter posted a 7-5, 6-1 win over Cheatwood at #3singles. At #4, Croker notched a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win against Petrone, whileHunter won 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 at #5 singles over Trystan Meniane. The lone UVasingles loss came at #6 as Duquette dropped a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 decision toChad Riley.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday, April 16 when it hosts thesixth-ranked Blue Devils of Duke. Play is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at theSheridan Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville.
