RALEIGH, N.C. — The 52nd-ranked University of Virginia women’stennis team defeated North Carolina State 6-3 on Saturday, April 15 at theRaleigh Racquet Club in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Cavaliers improve to13-8 overall and 3-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the victory.N.C. State drops to 5-13 overall and 0-7 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers clinched the team victory by winning five of sixsingles matches. UVa then won one of the three doubles matches to make thefinal score 6-3.
The ‘Hoos jumped out to a 3-0 lead with wins at #1, #2 and #3singles. At #1, second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) ranked No.99 posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over N.C State’s Marissa Gildmeister. Virginiathird-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) quickly followed witha 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Brie Glover at #2. In the #3 singles slot, UVafirst-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) defeated MyrnaBawono. The Wolfpack’s Loni Worsley won by injury default at the #4singles match. Worsley was leading 4-6, 7-5, 2-0 before UVa third-yearLeslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian) retired. First-yearJennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) defeated Kristen Nicholls at #5singles 6-4, 6-3 to give the Cavaliers a 4-1 advantage. Third-year KellyWeaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) was victorious 6-1, 6-0 at #6 singles.
In doubles play #1, Schweer and Weaver lost to Glover and Bawono8-4, while Tuchband and Williams won an 8-6 decision over Gildemeister andWorsley. Virginia defaulted at #3 singles to give the Wolfpack their thirdpoint of the match.
UVa returns to action on Sunday, April 16 when it competes againstWake Forest. Play is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Leighton TennisCenter in Winston-Salem, N.C.
