CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Cavaliers held the #14 Patriotsscoreless for the first 35:16 while scoring nine goals and held on for the13-4 victory today, moving the Hoos to 10-4 on the season. It was theCavaliers’ final regular season home game and before the contest the eightmembers of the fourth year class were honored for their contributions tothe team. Virginia was led offensively by Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./MarpleNewtown) who had three goals, chipped in four assists, and controlled fivedraws. Her four assists moves her to seventh all-time in career assistswith 40. The Cavaliers’ Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep)also had a hat trick while she scooped up 10 ground balls to lead the team.
Virginia jumped on the board just over a minute into the game asKelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) fed Amy Fromal (Folsom,Pa./Ridley) who was cutting through the arc for the opening score. Justover two minutes later Fromal assisted, hitting Jill Hansen (Killington,Vt./Woodstock Union) on the crease for a 2-0 lead. Haas scored her firstgoal two minutes later as she rolled the crease.
Fromal scored her second goal off Haas’ first assist of the day asshe cut through the crease two minutes later. Haas scored her second goalon a free position as she was fouled by the goalie on the far hash andstuck the ball in the empty net just over a minute later, forcing thePatriots to take a time out at 5-0.
Virginia went up 6-0 with just under ten minutes to play rightafter Frances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) made a save onthe Patriots’ first shot of the game. In the transition, the Cavaliers werefouled in the arc and Haas converted her second free position. The Hooscontrolled the next draw, and just under a minute later Lacey Aumiller(Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) split a double team and rolled the creasefor a 7-0 lead. Lacey and her sister Lauren were a part of the next twogoals as Lauren worked free in the arc and bounced a shot into the cagefrom the right with just over four minutes to go in the half. With twominutes to play in the period Lacey fed her sister on the crease, givingthe Cavaliers a 9-0 lead at the break.
George Mason broke the run with a goal 5:16 into the second half asJill Toomey’s shot landed in the net off an assist from Cara McFadden. TheCavaliers responded as Mills Hook (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s)rolled thecrease after a pass from Haas just over a minute later.
The Patriots then scored three goals in a five minute span to pullwithin 10-4, as McFadden scored twice and Toomey scored again off aMcFadden assist.
But the Cavaliers closed the scoring with three goals in the finalsix minutes. Hansen converted a quickstick on the crease at 5:46 from Haas.Lauren Aumiller drove to the cage at 3:59, and Stephy Samaras (Annapolis,Md./Annapolis), who led the Cavaliers with two caused turnovers, took afeed from Haas cutting across the mouth of the cage for the final goal at1:50.
Segarra started in the cage for the Cavaliers and played 40minutes, saving four and allowing just one goal. Mary Beth LaVerghetta(Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) came in to play 13 minutes, allowing threegoals and making one save. Liz McCarthy (Palm Beach, Fla./Taft (CT)) playedthe final seven minutes and made no saves and allowed no goals.
The Cavaliers will next play #1 Maryland in the semifinals of theACC tournament. Game time against the Terrapins is 3:00 pm in College Parkon Saturday, Apr 22.
