GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia first-year Jen Tuchband(Millburn, N.J./Millburn) and third-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston,N.Y./Kingston) have earned 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s TennisFlight Champion honors by virtue of their regular season ACC play.Tuchband and Weaver earn the honor at #5 and #6 singles, respectively. Twoplayers in each of the six singles and two tandems in each of the threedoubles flights have been named ACC Flight Champions. North Carolina’sCourtney Zalinksi and Florida State’s Ali Weber were the other ACC FlightChampions at #5 and #6, respectively.
Tuchband and Weaver are the sixth and seventh Virginia women’s players togarner ACC singles flight champion accolades and are the first since 1996when Stacey Gingold was the #5 singles champion. In 1998, current Cavalierthird-years Leslie Cook and Christie Schweer were the #3 doubles flightchampions. Since 1990 the ACC singles and doubles champions have beendetermined through regular season play.
Tuchband has had an outstanding rookie season for the Cavaliers. Tuchbandis tied with Weaver for the team lead in singles wins with 23 and she hasposted a team-best 23-10 (.697 winning percentage) record. She is 16-5(.762 winning percentage) at #5 singles, including a 4-4 mark in ACC play.Tuchband has teamed with Weaver for a 17-8 record in doubles play. The duois 13-3 at #3 doubles, which includes a 2-2 ACC record. Overall, Tuchbandis 20-10 in doubles action in 1999-2000. In September, Tuchband was theWolfpack Invitational Flight B Doubles Champion along with Weaver and therunner-up in Flight C Singles of the same tournament.
Weaver, a tri-captain, has had an equally impressive 1999-2000 campaign.She has posted a 23-13 singles record for a .639 winning percentage. At #6singles, Weaver is 12-9 overall and 4-4 in the ACC. With 23 singles wins,Weaver is just two wins shy of her collegiate high of 25 in the 1998-99season. In addition to teaming with Tuchband to win the WolfpackInvitational Flight B Doubles title in the fall, Weaver was the Flight CSingles Champion at the Brown Invitational in October.
Virginia, 13-9 overall and 3-5 in the ACC, is currently tied for 53rd inthe nation in the WingspanBank.com rankings released Wednesday, April 19.The Cavaliers are the sixth seed for the ACCs and will play third-seededand 26th-ranked Clemson on Friday, April 21 at 9:00 a.m. in thequarterfinals. The ACC Championship is being held April 20-23 at theRacquet Club of the South in Norcross, Ga.
