UVa Men’s Tennis Advances To ACC Semis

NORCROSS, Ga. – The fourth-seeded University of Virginia men’stennisteam defeated fifth-seeded Florida State 4-1 on Friday (April 21) toadvance to the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)Tournamentat the Racquet Club of the South.

Virginia won the doubles point with victories in the #1 and #2matches. UVa juniors Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill)and Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) defeated theSeminoles’Xavier Luscan and Rodrigo Laub 9-7 in the #1 doubles match. In the #2doubles match, Virginia’s team of junior Tommy Croker (Alexandria,Va./St.Stephens) and senior John Winter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s)defeatedNoah Schnell and Jay Travis of Florida State 8-5.

The Cavaliers ended the match with three singles victories.Vahalydefeated Luscan 6-1, 7-5 in the #1 singles match, Winter beat Schnell6-4,7-5 in the #3 singles match and junior Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill,N.C./Chapel Hill) defeated Travis 6-2, 6-4 in the #5 singles match.

Florida State’s Mike Ingham defeated Montgomery 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 inthe #2 singles match for the Seminoles’ lone point.

The victory improves Virginia’s record to 16-8 on the season,whileFlorida State drops to 13-10. The Cavaliers play top-seeded Duke onSaturday (April 22) at 2:00 p.m.
