COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Virginia sophomore attackman Ian Shure(Lutherville, Md.) scored the game-winning goal — his career-highfourth of the game — with 11 seconds left in the second overtime togive Virginia (9-1) a thrilling 17-16 comeback win in the longest ACCTournament game ever. The game, which was just the second overtime gamein ACC Tournament history, also featured the most goals ever in aconference tournament game (33), breaking the record of 32 set byVirginia (19) and Duke (13) in 1994.

Virginia rallied with six of the game’s final seven goals after fallingbehind 15-11 after UNC’s Joel Miller (Worthington, Ohio) scored hissecond goal of the game with 14:47 left in the fourth quarter. Shurescored the game’s next two goals at 12:21 and 11:36 to draw Virginiawithin two at 15-13. North Carolina (7-5) freshman midfielder AustinGarrison (New Canaan, Conn.) scored his career-best fifth goal of thegame to give the Tar Heels a 16-13 lead with 7:34 left in regulation.

The Cavaliers came back with vengeance as they shut down the Carolinaoffense which registered its highest offensive output of the season with16 goals. Virginia scored three goals in a span of just under twominutes on goals by Conor Gill (Lutherville, Md.), Jay Jalbert(Huntington, N.Y.) and Jason Hard’s (Bridgeport, N.Y.) game-tying goalwith 2:35 left in the fourth quarter.

The overtime sessions featured numerous chances for Virginia, whichwere stopped by North Carolina goalie Kris Blindenbacher (Narbeth, Pa.)on three occasions from point-blank range in the first overtime.Blindenbacher finished with 17 saves.

Along with Garrison’s career-day, Jeff Sonke (Birmingham, Mich.)tallied two goals and three assists for five points. Chase Martin(Owings Mills, Md.) had two goals and two assists for the Heels. ForVirginia, Gill joined Shure with four points in the game. Virginia advances to play the winner of the No. 2 seed Duke vs. No. 3seed Maryland game in the ACC Championship. That game will take place onSunday, April 23 and be broadcast live on HTS at 3:30 p.m.
