NORCROSS, Ga. — The 53rd-ranked University of Virginia women’s tennis teamlost to 26th-ranked Clemson 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the ACCChampionship Friday morning, April 21 at the Racquet Club of the South.With the loss, the Cavaliers have been eliminated from the ACC tournamentand now stand at 13-10 on the season. The Tigers, 15-5, advance to playthe winner of the #7 Maryland/#2 Duke match in the semifinals on Saturday,April 22.
Clemson, which won the regular season match 5-4 on April 2 in Clemson,S.C., took a 4-2 lead after the six singles matches. The Tigers clinchedthe victory by winning two of three doubles matches to make the final score6-3.
In singles play, the ‘Hoos received wins from their two ACC singlesflight champions, first-year Jen Tuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) andthird-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston). Tuchband won her #5singles match 7-6 (2), 6-4 over Clemson’s Christina Oldock. It markedTuchband’s second win of the season over Oldock. The Cavaliers’ othersingles win came from Weaver at the #6 slot. Weaver posted a 6-0, 6-3victory over Anna Savitskaya to avenge a three-set regular season loss.
At #1 singles, second-year and No. 99 Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah)lost to No. 24 Carmina Giraldo 6-1, 6-2. Virginia third-year ChristieSchweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) fell to Cath Galvin 6-3, 6-3 at #2. At#3 singles, UVa first-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton)lost in three sets to Renata Brito, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3. The fourth UVasingles loss came at #4, as third-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach,Fla./Lake Worth Christian) was defeated by Laurence Jayet 7-6 (2), 6-4.
In doubles play, UVa was only able to win the #2 match as they also did inthe regular season. O’Donnell and second-year Christine Kim (McLean,Va./Bishop Ireton) teamed to defeat Giraldo and Galvin 8-6. At #1 doubles,No. 40 Cook and Schweer lost to Brito and Jayet 8-2, while Tuchband andWeaver dropped an 8-6 decision to Savitskaya and Cynthia Clausen.
