COLLEGE PARK, Md.–Virginia’s Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) had ahat trick to spark Virginia offensively while the Cavalier defense held theTerrapins to their lowest goal ouput of the season behind Frances Segarra’s(Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) nine saves, but it was not enough as theCavaliers fell to the Terps 8-6 in the ACC semifinals today.
Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead eight minutes into the game as threedifferent Terrapins scored. Virginia scored the next two goals, both on freepositions, to pull within one at the 17:30 mark of the first period. After aSegarra save, the Cavalier transition brought the ball down to the offensivethird where Haas was awarded a free position, which she converted to put theCavaliers on the board. Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) won the ensuing drawafter a long battle and worked the ball into the arc where she was alsoawarded a free position which she converted to cut the deficit to one. Withjust under six minutes to play, Maryland scored the next two goals in justover a minute to take a 5-2 lead into the half.
The Terrapins went up 6-2 as Alison Comito drove across the crease with10 minutes gone in the second half, but the Cavaliers answered as LaurenAumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) took a dump in the arc from MollyCangemi (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Maryland went up by four again with10 minutes to play.
The Cavaliers then went on a three-goal rally as Gina Sambus (GardenCity, N.Y./Garden City) capitalized on a broken Maryland clear and Haasconverted a free position at 8:41. Kelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C.Henderson) won the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers worked it to LaurenAumiller who fed Haas for a goal at 5:51. Virginia pulled within one at 4:02as Fromal fed Mills Hook (Timonium, Md./St. Paul’s) who drove to the cage,forcing the Terrapins to take the time out.
Virginia held the ball in the arc but lost the ball, and the Terrapinsconverted the turnover at the 2:00 mark for the final score of 8-6. Segarraled the Cavaliers with five ground balls.
The Hoos will next face #7 Loyola on Wednesday, April 26 in Baltimore.
