DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Virginia women’s track and field team stands insecond place after the first day of competition at the ACC Outdoor TrackChampionships thanks in part to the strong performance by the throws squad.Virginia has 32 points, with 13 coming from the discus throw in which HilaryWilson took All-ACC honors with her third-place finish at 49.82 (163′ 5″).On the men’s side, the Cavaliers hold on to the men’s javelin title as Brian Kollar tossed a season-long 71.02 (223′ 0″). The men are in seventh after thefirst day.
Wilson led two other Cavaliers who also finished in the top 8 as ElieseMitchell finished fifth with a toss of 45.14 (148′ 1″) and Inge Jorgenson wassixth with her throw of 44.78 (146′ 11″). The Cavaliers also got points fromthe pole vault as Annica White took fourth with a vault of 3.45 (11′ 3.75″).Vika Osipenko also cleared 3.45 but took sixth on the basis of misses. TheHoos got a fourth in the long jump as well with Kiamesha Otey’s leap of 5.95m(19′ 6.25″) and Curtrell Frye went 5.74m (18′ 10″) for seventh. Virginia alsogot points from Sarah Folse, who took fifth in the 3000m run at 9:42.09.
Otey will compete in the 100 and 200-meter dashed tomorrow afgterqualifying with a 12.16 and 24.63 respectively today. Other Cavaliers whoqualified for the finals on Saturday include Frances Warner in the 1500m andNatalie Randolph in the 400 hurdles.
Virginia’s Kollar successfully defended the javelin title for theCavaliers with his NCAA automatic toss of 71.02 (223′ 0″). In doing so, heset the new school record, breaking the record of 69.68 set by SteveKiessling in 1992. In the process, Kollar becomes the first Cavalier inhistory to record a 71-meter throwJ. D. Murdock also competed in the javelinfor the Cavaliers and threw a 58.72 (192′ 8″) to take fourth. Tim Bilmanis continued the strong day in the weights for the Cavaliers with his fourth-placetoss of 48.76 (160′ 0″) in the discus.
The Cavaliers also notched points in the long distance events as JeffBinggeli took eighth in the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9:37.46 and MattRuhl finished fifth in the 10000m run with a 30:46.60. Virginia will look topull points from the 200, where Rauhn Turner ran a season best 21.63 andqualified for the finals. Other Hoos who qualified for the finals are a trioof men in the 1500 as Rob Pearce ran a 3:53.90, and Bill Palmer was right behind him at 3:44.44 and Steve Gross also qualified with a time of 3:55.50.
The Cavaliers conclude their ACC Championships on Saturday, April 22.
