CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s lacrosse programclaimed two of the three Atlantic Coast Conference’s annual awardsannounced today. Senior attackman Drew McKnight was named the ACC Player ofthe Year, while head coach Dom Starsia was named the conference’s Coach ofthe Year in voting by the league’s four head coaches.
McKnight has been instrumental in leading one of the nation’s most potentoffenses this season. The Virginia Beach, Va., native leads the ACC inscoring with 46 points (4.18 points/g) and is second in assists with 22(2.00/g). He has also scored 24 goals this season to lead the team. Hisselection marks the second year in a row a Cavalier has been selected theplayer of the year. Tucker Radebaugh, an assistant coach at UVa thisseason, won the award last season.
The coaching award marks the fourth time Starsia has been named theconference’s top coach. This season he has led the Cavaliers to a 10-1overall record and the #1 spot in the polls. Virginia has won its last 10games, including two wins in last weekend’s ACC Tournament to win theleague crown. This is the second year in a row he has been selected coachof the year. He also won the award in 1995 and 1997.
Under Starsia’s tutelage, Virginia has produced 41 All-Americans, 28All-ACC selections, four ACC Rookies of the Year and three ACC Players ofthe Year. He has an 89-28 record in eight seasons at UVa.
Maryland defenseman Michael Howley was named the ACC Rookie of the Year.
