GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team is the fourthseed in the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Tournament which willbe held April 29 through May 1 at Lady Seminole Field at Florida StateUniversity in Tallahassee, Fla. The Cavaliers (22-34, 3-3 ACC) will playfifth-seeded Georgia Tech (25-29, 2-6 ACC) in the first game of thefive-team, double elimination tournament on Saturday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m.
North Carolina (45-15, 6-2 ACC) is the top seed, while Maryland (26-23, 3-3ACC) is the second seed. Host Florida State (40-24, 2-2 ACC) is the thirdseed, followed by Virginia and Georgia Tech.
The winner of the UVa-Georgia Tech game will then play #1 seed NorthCarolina at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. The 3:00 p.m. game on Saturday pits #2Maryland vs. #3 Florida State.
UVa is the fourth seed for the third consecutive year. As the fourth seedin 1998 and 1999, the Cavaliers advanced to the championship game of thetournament. Virginia played in the championship game of the ACC tournamentfive times in the eight-year history of the tournament, including the lasttwo years. The ‘Hoos won the 1994 ACC Tournament by defeating FloridaState 3-0 in the title game.
Prior to departing for the ACC Tournament on Friday, the Cavaliers willplay a Southern Atlantic Softball Alliance doubleheader against EastCarolina on Wednesday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at The Park.
