BALTIMORE, Md. — The Cavaliers’ Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre DamePrep) won the draw in the second half of overtime, her eighth of the game,and the Hoos got the ball to Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) whodrove to the cage and scored her third goal of the game, putting Virginiaup for good. The Cavaliers then displayed their pressure defense and heldthe Greyhounds off the board for the final 1:39 of the game, including acaused turnover by Lauri Kenis (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) to preserve thevictory. Aumiller notched a hat trick and had two assists, giving her 15assists on the season, which sets a new record for helpers as a first year.
The Cavaliers jumped out on top early as Lauren Aumiller converteda quick stick feed on the crease from Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) justover a minute into the contest. The Greyhounds answered with a goal twominutes later, but the Hoos then scored the next two goals in under aminute to go up by a pair. Frances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West ChesterEast) picked up a loose ball on the crease and the Cavalier transitionworked it down to Fromal, who drove to the cage at 23:33 to go up by one.Less than a minute later Haas and Lauren Aumiller worked a give and go toput the Hoos up by two.
Loyola answered to pull within one three minutes after that, andthen tied the game with 12:47 to play. Virginia went ahead again as LaurenAumiller picked up a loose ball after Sarah Gercke’s (Charlottesville,Va./’St. Anne’s-Belfield) free position fell short and stuck it in the cagewith 6:24 to play in the half. Loyola tied the game a second time as StaceyMorlang connected on a free position with 3:33 to go in the half.
Virginia scored the final two goals of the half in 1:49 to take a6-4 lead into the break. Stephy Samaras (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), who ledall players with three caused turnovers, had one with just under twominutes to play and the Cavaliers worked the ball upfield where Fromalconverted her own free position with 1:49 to go. Virginia won possession ofthe ensuing draw and with 17 seconds to go Mills Hook (Timonium, Md./St.Paul’s) collected a high feed in the arc from Kelly Allenbach (WestChester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) and scored, putting the Cavaliers up by twoat halftime.
Virginia went up 7-4 six minutes into the second half as Haasconverted a quickstick feed from Lauren Aumiller. But Loyola scored thenext four goals in a span of 8:48 to take a one goal lead with 11:10 toplay with four different players finding the back of the net.
Lauren Aumiller and Haas hooked up for the tying goal just 33seconds later as Haas found Aumiller all alone in front of the cage afterwinning the ensuing draw.
The Cavaliers held the ball in their offensive end with the timerunning down in regulation, but the Hounds got control of the ball behindtheir cage with 18 seconds to play. As they worked their clear, Keniscaused a turnover and the Cavaliers ran out the clock, setting up Haas’heroics.
Segarra had ten saves while Samaras led the Cavaliers with sevenground balls.
The Cavaliers close out their regular season with a game at #13Vanderbilt on Sunday, April 30. Game time against the Commodores is 12:00in Nashville.
