COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior left-handed pitcher Joe Hart pitched the firstcomplete game of his career, leading Maryland (19-26, 3-13 ACC) to a 4-2win over Virginia (20-27-1, 7-12 ACC) in baseball action on Friday atShipley Field. The game marked the first of a three-game ACC seriesbetween the two schools.
Hart (3-6) went 9.0 innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits andstruck out five batters. Cavalier starter Kevin Shrout (4-3) went thefull 8.0 innings, allowing just four runs on four hits, but two of theruns were unearned.
Junior left fielder Brian Patenaude hit a home run on the first pitch inthe bottom of the first inning, giving the Terps a quick 1-0 lead.Maryland then took advantage of four Virginia errors in the bottom ofthe fifth inning and scored two more runs, extending the lead to 3-0.
Virginia got a run back in the top of the sixth inning when seniorshortstop Tim LaVinge scored on a fielder’s choice. The Terps stretchedthe lead 4-1 on a RBI single by sophomore catcher Kevin McDonald in thebottom of the seventh inning.
The Cavaliers got a run back in the eighth inning when sophomore leftfielder David Stone scored on an infield single, but Hart held themscoreless the rest of the way.
Maryland and Virginia continue their series Saturday at 7 p.m.
