CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Brian Vahaly of the University of Virginia istheAtlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year, and VahalyandUVa’s Huntley Montgomery have earned All-ACC honors. The awards weredetermined by vote of the conference’s nine head coaches.
Vahaly, a junior from Atlanta, Ga., is currently ranked thirdnationally among singles players in the most recent WingspanBank.comCollegiate Tennis Rankings. He has an overall singles record of 32-4andis 22-1 at #1 singles. He had an overall singles record of 8-0 in ACCcompetition during the 2000 regular season and was a conference flightchampion at #1 singles. Vahaly’s 32 singles victories are a UVasingle-season record.
Montgomery, a junior from Chapel Hill, N.C., has an overallsinglesrecord of 21-13 and is 14-8 in #2 singles. He had a 4-3 record in ACCcompetition during the 2000 regular season.
Vahaly and Montgomery have compiled an overall doubles record of18-7 and are currently ranked 23rd in the nation. They are 14-5 in #1doubles competition and compiled a 6-2 record in ACC competition duringthe2000 regular season.
Other members of the 12-man All-ACC Team are Tomasz Boniecki(Clemson), Josh Goffi (Clemson), Mike Ingham (Florida State), EricJackson(N.C. State), Xavier Luscan (Florida State), Andres Pedroso (Duke),MarcioPetrone (North Carolina), Tripp Phillips (North Carolina), Doug Root(Duke)and Ramsey Smith (Duke).
Roger Anderson of Georgia Tech is the ACC’s Rookie of the Yearinmen’s tennis, and Sam Paul of North Carolina is the Coach of the Year.
