No. 1 Virginia Tops Ohio State In Men’s Lacrosse

COLUMBUS, OhioConor Gill scored four goals and addedfour assists to lead the No. 1 Virginia men’s lacrosse team to a 13-7victory over Ohio State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Saturday in front of1,855 fans, the largest crowd in Ohio State lacrosse history. The Buckeyesfall to 6-7, while Virginia extends its winning streak to 11 games and movesto 11-1 on the season.

Visiting Virginia dominated the first three quarters of the game,opening with a 10-0 lead. The Cavaliers scored four goals in the firststanza, including two goals and an assist from Gill.

In the second quarter the Buckeyes stepped up their defense holdingVirginia to only one tally.

Virginia came out ready in the second half. The Cavaliers scoredfive unanswered goals to open the third quarter, to give them their largestlead. Ohio State finally got on the board late in the third with a goal byJohn Cummings (Fr., Baltimore, Md./Loyola).

The fourth quarter was all Ohio State. The Buckeyes outscored theCavaliers 6-3 in the final period. Tim Houston (Sr., Garden City,N.J./Garden City) found the back of the net twice in the fourth quarter.Ohio State also got three points from Pat Myers (Fr., Kennebunk,Maine/Kennebunk) off a goal and two assists.

Buckeye goalkeeper Mike Abeles (Sr., Westfield, N.J./Westfield)played all 60 minutes and recorded 15 saves. Virginia split time betweentwo goalies. Derek Kenney played the first three quarters and finished withfive saves, while Ben O’Neil played the last 15 minutes and did not record asave.
