SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Virginia men’s golf team finished thirdout of 10 teams at the Wofford Invitational at the Carolina CountryClub (par 72, 6,765 yards). Maryland held on to win the tournament witha nine-over par 873. Augusta State, who entered the final round tiedwith Virginia for second place, fired the day’s best round of 291 toovertake Virginia and finish second, one stroke behind the Terps.Virginia shot 295 in the final round to finish at 14-over 878 for thetournament.
Maryland’s Keith Unikel won individual honors on the second-holeof a play-off between Virginia’s Cameron Yancey and Augusta State’sOliver Wilson. The trio ended the day tied at four-under par. Unikelsank a two-foot putt for birdie to win the play-off. Yancey left a12-putt for birdie short while Wilson’s approach did not hit the green.
For the Cavaliers, James Driscoll (75-72-70) finished eighth atone-over par, Steve Marino (76-72-77) and Justin Goodhue (76-71-78)finished in a tied for 23rd at nine-over, Shivin Kwatra (86-79-75)finished in 49th place at 24-over par and Mike Mitchell (85-80-77)finished in 50th place at 26-over par.
